One of the most unusual and interesting things I did on my visit to Singapore was head off to Chinatown early one evening, meander around the colourful streets until I reached the .

Once there, I had a traditional Chinese meal, while watching a video of Chinese Opera. After dinner, one of the opera singers, in full dress, gave a talk about the traditions of Chinese Opera, the meaning behind the costumes and the stylised movements. Even the make up represents characters (known as good or evil, to those familiar with this art).



After the informative talk, two singers performed a scene in full dress. It was really lovely to watch, and as the room is so small, it was great to be so close to the performers. I was amazed at how much I'd learnt from the talk, and understood so much more about what was happening on the stage.



My favourite part of the evening however, was unplanned. The projectionist started singing along subconsciously with the film, as obviously it was a very popular aria. His enjoyment of the filmed music was contagious, and I found myself enjoying it all the more because of his harmonizing. On leaving, I told him he should be on stage too, and he chuckled and shook his head but blushed delightedly.
