Chinese New Year begins on Feb 10th with the arrival of the Year of the Snake. On the Gold Coast, celebrations are scheduled to take place in various venues.

Chinese New Year is the most important date on the Chinese calendar. It's all about family gathering to celebrate the dawn of a new year. The Gold Coast welcomes hundreds of thousands of Chinese visitors each year. This time of year back in China is freezing cold, so for many visitors it's a new experience to celebrate New Year in a summer, beach setting. It's not unlike a European person experiencing their first Christmas in Australia. There is a growing Chinese community in the Southport and Broadbeach areas, so local celebrations will be welcomed, as opposed to driving to China Town in Brisbane. It also means that other nationalities get to experience events on the Gold Coast.

Surfers Paradise will hold an array of Chinese cultural displays, Chinese food and the Dragon and Lion Dances. Lion Dancers are commonly seen during Chinese New Year, as it is believed that the loud beats of the drum and crashing of cymbals, together with the aggressive dancing of the dragon or lion, can chase away bad spirits. To see some of these vibrant displays, make your way to the Surfers Paradise Foreshore on Sunday 10th February, 2013, from 1pm to 6pm. The event is free. Click here for more info.

From Feb 1 – 17, "Hot Air" will be providing special Chinese New Year balloon rides, with a champagne breakfast afterwards. If you want to see in the first sunrise for the Year of the Snake by balloon, click here for the Hot Air website or phone 1300 766 887 for information. The price is $250pp.

Jupiters Casino will be serving up an array of authentic Chinese dishes in their various restaurants, during February. They will also host Lion Dancers in the casino and atrium on selected dates. Click here for info .

Here's another chance to sample Asian delicacies. Enjoy a Yum Cha feast while cruising the Gold Coast waterways with a River Cruises Yum Cha Lunch Cruise.

Money in red envelopes is traditionally handed out on New Years Day, given from elder to younger as New Year gifts. Red is regarded as symbol of energy, happiness and good luck. The amount of money inside should be of even numbers, as odd numbers are associated with cash given during funerals.

2013 is the Year of the Snake. According to ancient Chinese wisdom, a snake in the house is a good omen because it means your family will not starve. It is believed that the animal ruling the year in which a person is born, has a profound influence on personality, saying: "This is the animal that hides in your heart."
