The Chinese Zodiac is related to the Chinese calendar and the Pig is the twelfth of the 12-year cycle of animals, thus completing the full zodiac rotation. This is thought to bring renewal for the year ahead.
To welcome the Year of the Pig, Victoria Harbour's state-of-the-art Light House installation is celebrating with a special
Chinese New Year light show .
As the sunsets each evening, the facade of the Light House building will come to life with a magnificent light show. Watch as a Chinese dragon flies across the building as gold coins appear to drop from the roof and lanterns make their way slowly up the walls.
This free light show will be on from Monday 4 February until Tuesday 19 February 2019 between the hours of 8.30pm and midnight.
The Light House is best viewed from Buluk Park, directly opposite, so sit a while and enjoy the show. Why not get into the spirit of celebration and wear red, white and gold - lucky colours for the Year of the Pig.
Light House is located at the junction of Bourke and Collins Streets. At other times of the year, it projects Melbourne's weather in real-time, displaying how the weather "feels." From dusk until midnight, for five minutes on the hour, a link to the Bureau of Meteorology's weather station provides a data feed that makes the magic happen. Then from midnight until dawn, the feature reflects the moon patterns.
To get there, jump on the number 11 or 48 tram that runs down Collins Street towards Victoria Harbour and jump off at the last stop.
