In 2015,
Sydney's Chinese New Year Festival will run from Friday February 13 to Sunday March 1.
The event will be
launched with celebrations at
Dawes Point , including the start of the
Lanterns of the Terracotta Warrior Exhibition . There will also be traditional drumming, lion dances, food trucks and a teaser for the Twilight Parade. Formal proceedings (including an address from the Lord Mayor of Sydney) will run from 7.30pm to 8.00pm, but there will be entertainment from 7.00pm to 10.00pm.
The next day, on Saturday February 14, a new festival event called
Lunar Streets will be held. Sydney's
Chinatown , Thaitown and Koreatown will set up long outdoor tables where you can celebrate the tastes of their respective countries. Roving entertainment will also add to the experience. This event is free and will run from 5.00pm (dusk) to 11.00pm.
Lunar Feasts offers another chance to taste delicious meals, this time at participating restaurants. A list of venues and dishes can be found
here .
A highlight of the Chinese New Year Festival, taking place in the middle of the event, is the
Twilight Parade. It will run on Sunday February 22 at 8.15pm, but there will be entertainment from 7.00pm till 1.00am, including fireworks and building projections. The parade route runs along George Street then turns towards Darling Harbour to finish near the Chinese Gardens. A map and booking information can be found
here .
If you're looking for some free cultural performances, the
lion dances in Chinatown are a good option. They will take place every weekend, during the afternoon.
Dragon Boat Races are another great spectacle. They will run from 9.00am to 5.00pm on Saturday February 28 and Sunday March 1 at Cockle Bay in Darling Harbour. A 90 metre viewing platform will make viewing the events easier.
Other events that make up the festival include an
exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art called The Revival and special activities at the
QVB . Further information on everything can be found on the
event website .
