Lion dancers will wow you.
It doesn't matter if you're a cat person or a dog person, there's plenty to enjoy this year at the Pimpama Junction Shopping Centre's Chinese New Year Celebrations. This is the third year the centre is hosting a free evening of fun for local families. It all happens on Friday the 23rd of February, where the fun kicks off outside Exotic Wok & Grill from 5:30pm.
What Can You Expect?
It wouldn't be a Chinese New Year event without a traditional Chinese Lion Dance show to celebrate the Year of the Dog! The lion dance is a traditional Chinese dance in which the dancers mimic a lion's movement while wearing a large, colourfully decorated lion costume. There are usually two dancers in a lion costume that has a head part and a tail part. The dancers move to the beat of drums and gongs to thrill the audience.
"The show also incorporates an enthralling martial arts demonstration and electric firecrackers," event organisers told Weekend Notes.
Lucky red lanterns for Chinese New Year
As they say in the old infomercials… but wait, there's more!
Organisers tell us, "
Select retailers at the Centre will be offering traditional Chinese New Year menus, share plates and one-night-only offers."
Unsurprisingly, the past couple of years' celebrations have been a massive hit with the neighbourhood, drawing large crowds.
Exotic Wok & Grill owner, Jenny Lee, says she is looking forward to seeing even more locals coming together this year, "
It's always very exciting to see our diverse community come together to celebrate Chinese New Year," she said. "There has always been a strong sense of openness within Pimpama and its surrounds. These celebrations bring us together to enjoy good food, good fun and good company, all while experiencing a taste of traditional Chinese culture."
Word on the street is that you'll get the best view of the entertainment and festivities if you book for dinner with your favourite Pimpama Junction Shopping Centre restaurant.
"There will also be plenty of food options for those looking to grab a quick bite during the performances," organisers say.
Every dog has its year!
Year of the Dog
The dog is the eleventh Chinese zodiac sign. There are twelve signs total. The Chinese view dogs as an auspicious animal since they're 'man's best friend'. If a dog comes to a house it's meant to be a sign of good fortune.
