2011 is the Year of the Rabbit !

The festivities will begin on Sunday, February 6, 2011 and the fun-filled day will include traditional Chinese New Year celebrations - such as open-air markets, fireworks, lanterns, dragon dances and fortune gods and modern cultural activities - such as a karaoke competition, a chess competition and Chinese opera.

The Premier of Victoria and the Lord Mayor of Melbourne will launch the Year of the Rabbit in Melbourne's Chinatown, in Little Bourke St at 10am.

There is expected to several cultural performances throughout the day, including the dragon and lion dances, which will weave its way through Exhibition Street, Little Bourke and Russell Street - removing all the bad spirits, to help start a prosperous 2011.

All are welcomed to this major free event - there will be many outdoor markets selling all kinds of foods and drinks and arts and crafts. There are also many cultural activities and performances by local and international performance groups and events specifically designed to entertain kids.

Look forward to the traditional Chinese New Year cuisine - which includes Mandarin oranges, fish dishes, noodles, Jau gok (Chinese New Year dumpling), Nian gao (Chinese New Year's cake) and various sweets and treats.

Also dress in bright colours, such as red, to help remove the bad spirits, or in new clothes to signify the start of the new year!
