Melon fruits of all shapes and sizes will be eaten, rolled, worn, judged, and much more at this year's Chinchilla Melon Festival on the western Darling Downs from 13 to 16 February 2025.
If February is the month of romance, then there is a lot of love and affection for melon fruits at the annual
Chinchilla Melon Festival . Over 4 jam-packed days, visitors and locals to
Chinchilla in the west of Queensland will find it hard to avoid the massive sweet and sticky celebration of melons with events and activities in this fruit's honour.
It seems that nothing is off-limits when it comes to celebrating melons. Try this for a program including a street parade, markets, beach party, free family activities, farm tours, music, entertainment and much melon more.
Now in its 16th year, the organisers have let their imaginations go wild with left nothing, pardon the pun, off the table in a smorgasbord of melon-related activities for this year's festival such as:
Melon Skiing
Melon Bungee
Melon Bash
Adrenalin-filled Melon Bike Show
Melon Pip Spitting
Melon Chariot Races
Farm tours
Melon Rodeo
The program events are a mix of free and ticketed activities. One of the most highly contested events is the weigh-in to find the biggest melon in a competition of mammoth fruity proportions. Exactly how big can a melon get? Find out who will take out the honour of being the Big Melon Champion.
Why is the Melon Festival held in Chinchilla?
It's natural that Chinchilla holds a melon festival since it produces 25% of Australia's watermelons, rockmelons and honeydew. The Melon Festival is only held bi-annually so if you miss it this year, you will have to wait another 2 years to experience it again. To make a whole weekend of it, camping sites are available at the Chinchilla Showgrounds and the Chinchilla Polocrosse Fields. Find the giant watermelon in the
Chinchilla Botanic Gardens for the perfect selfie.
Chinchilla is located 160 km northwest of Toowoomba and 260 km from Brisbane. The town has a population of 6600 and 6290 residents and is expected to explode to 20,000 during the melon festival.
Be a part of the crowd and don't miss this mouth-watering event.
