Chinatown in Melbourne's Little Bourke Street is worth a visit at the best of times. It is a flash of bright red in what can be a sombre city. It provides a vibrant world with its bustling sea of diners, with spruikers siphoning them in all directions; "come eat here" they say ever so politely.

It is wonderful to think that the area dates back to the Gold Rush days of the 1850s, when the first wave of Chinese immigrants began trading. They perhaps figured, quite rightly, that more money could be made from feeding hungry people through market gardens and restaurants than sifting through tailings on the gold fields.

The Asian archways, lanterns and stone lions are all reminders of this glorious past.

And it is wonderful that increasingly we get to share in so many celebrations which light up this vibrant area even further.

One event coming up for the #8206 ;">Mid-Autumn Moon Festiva l, that I think deserves a special mention, is the Progressive Dinner which takes you to a couple of great restaurants in Chinatown.

The dinner begins at Chine On Paramount which has large glass windows so you can see all the festivities going on while you eat.

They will serve you a traditional bowl of hot soup, followed by a platter of various Chinese entrees. This Cantonese-style restaurnat has elegant surrounds and is famous for its use of Chinese medicinal herbs which play a role in the cooking.

Then it is onto the Shark Fin Inn which is just a block away. But as you move through Chinatown you get to carry the special Chinese lanters which are provided. So you can light up the night like a glow worm!

At Shark Finn Inn,l you will get to have traditional mains, and traditional #8206 ;">mooncake and desserts.

I only wish they would do this every night. There is so much choice in Chinatown that sometimes it is hard to choose.
