Chinaman Creek Dam is located on Chinaman Creek Dam Road Cloncurry. It's about ten minutes drive west of town or about 3km turn off from Barkly Highway on the west side of Cloncurry. Approximately 1km before you reach the dam, you have to go through unsealed road, but the road is not that bad as it still can be passed by small non-4WD vehicle.
Cloncurry was voted as Queensland's Friendliest Town in 2013 and Chinaman Creek Dam is one of its most attractive places to visit. This dam is the water source for the residents of Cloncurry and a popular recreation spot.
The landscape surrounding the dam is distinctive and it is not like the typical image of the outback with its flat, dry backdrops and seemingly endless horizons. You can see red craggy rock formations and red termite hills poking up from the surrounding low hills around the dam.
You can do some water sports like canoeing, but please be cautious when you swim in the water as water lice can be found in the shallow water area. If you are a keen birdwatcher, you won't be disappointed by the huge variety of birdlife here including cormorants, darters, ducks, pelicans, rainbow bee-eaters, corellas, white-necked herons, pee wees, jacanas, hawks, straw-necked ibises and the glossy ibis.
If you came here for fishing, you will find Barramundi, Sooty Grunter, Spangled Perch, Banded Brunter, Sleepy Cod Striped Sleepy Cod, Triangular Shield Catfish and Redclaw crayfish. Thanks to Mount Isa Fish Stocking Group (MIFSG), the fish in Chinaman Creek Dam is always enough for every fisherman. Chinaman Creek Dam is also open to all forms of boating with a concrete boat ramp provided.
Be active around Chinaman Creek Dam or simply take in its tranquillity. There are also a number of free barbecues including a fireplace and covered picnic facilities for you to make use of while there. There are public toilet facilities and your furry pet is also welcome to enjoy what Chinaman Creek Dam offers. As the parking area here is not too big, Chinaman Creek Dam rest area is only suitable for small caravans only. Please be aware that camping is prohibited here.
