First opened at Glebe in Sydney, China Chilli Restaurant now has a branch at Gouger Street in Adelaide, the street to visit if you are looking for an Asian restaurant to dine in. When the restaurant was first opened, it was very popular and we could not get a table without reservation. Now that the opening frenzy is over, we decided to give it a try to see how their food was like. Their ordering system is unique, with the menu presented on an iPad which you use to select your dishes. True to their name, most of the dishes served here are spicy, so be warned if you are not used to spicy food.
The Sizzling Beef with Chilli Sauce we ordered had tender pieces of beef that was cooked just right with a spicy chilli sauce that helped to bring out the flavour of the dish. The slightly sweet onions helped to balance out the spicy zing from the chilli sauce.
Although the sauce of the Baby Cuttlefish Stir-Fried with Pickled Chilli complemented the ingredients of the dish perfectly, we thought the cuttlefish was a bit overcooked. The vegetables however were cooked to perfection. What looks like cherry tomatoes were actually pickled chillies, with a distinct sour taste and a lot of seeds so proceed carefully if you wish to have a taste.
The string beans in the String Beans Stir-Fried with Pork Mince and Pickle Vegetables had the right crunch to them, though they were not as nice as ones we ate at Ding Hao. The best part of the dish was the pork mince and pickled vegetables that helped to round out the flavour of the string beans, with the pickled vegetables adding a delectable salty flavour.
