Where can you find a good Thai restaurant in the Eastern suburbs nowadays? There are quite a few lying around Sydney but you wouldn't normally see one in this area.
On the rare occasion that my friends and I decided to head to Coogee beach for a little exploring, we happened upon this traditionally decorated, corner-block restaurant, situated not far from the beach. After an initial inspection of the lunch menu on offer, we decided to give Chilli Box a go as the enticing $10.90 lunch meals looked to be a bargain.
For lunch, with $10.90, you receive:
1. A three piece entree - fishcake, vermicelli and vegetables rice paper roll and a traditional deep-fried pastry pocket with vegetable filling served with sweet chilli sauce.
4. A main dish of your choice. There were about 10 dishes to choose from ranging from the signature Pad Thai to laksa to fried rice. Of course, if you go to a Thai restaurant, you would choose something that is more 'authentic Thai' than say a fried rice dish.
With this main dish, one had a choice of chicken, pork, beef or vegetarian, so there is definitely something for everyone. Here are just some of the dishes we ordered:
Pad see ew - flat rice noodles stir fried in authentic sweet sauce
The serving for the main dish was quite large, considering the other side dishes that had already been served but it was well worth the price. Service was fast, the dishes came out together and most important of all, the traditional Laos/Thai taste was prominent within the flavours of the dish. This combined with the beautifully decorated interior - which included elephant statues and a dangling ceiling - most certainly set the atmosphere of this casual dining retaurant.
I must admit though, the soup was a let-down as it was just a typical MSG soup that you can find in any Chinese takeaway shop. Other than that, everything else was delicious. What's more, Chilli Box is also a BYO restaurant for those who really like to enjoy a decent dinner at an affordable price. I would definitely recommend dining in here to anyone with a craving for Thai cuisine, or just anyone who likes food for that matter.
