Chilli lovers are a pretty determined bunch who need a regular boost to feed their addiction. And yes peppers contain capsaicin, a substance that causes the burning sensation and makes the body secrete endorphins which deliver a natural high.

The Mecca in Adelaide for Chilli lovers is a little innocuous store on Magill Rd called .

is a colourful shop crowded with thousands of items related to the chilli and Mexican living. Not only food, but clothing, ornaments, religious themed items and artwork are all crammed into an incredibly orderly but busy display. On entering your eyes are overwhelmed with the colourful displays everywhere from the floor to the ceiling.

It's only a few doors away from the deliciously authentic Maiz & Mezcal and the Burger Foundry (home of the jerk chicken burger), so it's not surprising that there is a strong synergy between them.

There really is something for almost everyone here, with bars of tasty chilli chocolate near packs of Jim Beam BBQ sauce and marinades. Colourful Mayan runners hang from the walls alongside sombreros and chilli printed shirts. Seeds, sweets, kitchen implements - almost anything related to chilli or Mexico can be found here. It's even possible to hire a nachos making machine for your next party from here.

When I queried part owner Joel about the spelling of the shop name, he pointed out that it is the best phonetic representation of the original word used in the ancient Nahuatl language. He feels that it's more appropriate to use that, rather than the spelling that has evolved over time with anglicisation.

I respect that view, but will continue to stick with my spelling to minimise confusion among readers. But if you'd like to know more, check out the glossary on the website under J for Joel.

However it's spelt, there is a mind boggling range of sauces available from . You can see just a few in the photo above. But even if chilli isn't really your thing, this shop is worth a visit just to browse the colourful display, and maybe pick up an ornament or gift for a friend.

Take a look sometime, it's a hot experience.
