Cuddling chickens brings delight to children's faces
The Nest is a not-for-profit organisation completely volunteer-run, who passionately support the development of education and rehabilitation programs for women and children's issues. They currently receive little or no funding, however, since opening approximately two years ago, they have developed partnerships with eighteen other organisations and communities throughout Brisbane.

Their aim is to reduce social isolation and to provide advocacy, education and harm prevention strategies for women and children from all backgrounds. The Nest's home base is a beautiful heritage listed urban home in Everton Park. Over fifty volunteers give up their time each week to keep the doors open. If you would like to become part of the friendly team of volunteer's please go to their website. There are no rules on how many hours you need to volunteer; the time you give is entirely up to you.

The Nest runs a variety of workshops with the money raised from the ticket price going into The Nest's Community. These include crochet, sewing classes, Mexican embroidery, social craft groups on a Sunday, Foundation paper piecing for Quilting, Quilting social groups, rag rugs and much more. Information on these classes can be found here.

As part of the creative community hub, The Nest has a Garden Project providing an open space for community gardening, cultural workshops, activities and events. Sustainability workshops in the garden promote chemical-free low-cost gardening, composting, worm farming, seed collection, bush tucker, plant propagating, preserving, fermenting and cooking. Other workshops include sculpture, mosaics, children's art murals, stencil and graffiti art, pottery, Indigenous art and story-telling, drama, basket weaving, candle making and much more.

The Garden Project also has space for native bees and free-range chickens. On Monday 18th February 2019, The Nest Community is hosting a Children's Workshop Chicken Cuddle and Feeding. Children will also have the opportunity of seeing the stingless native bees in the garden. This is a free event, however, you must register through Eventbrite to obtain a ticket one ticket per child. Adults do not need a ticket. Hens can easily be overwhelmed if there is a large number of participants, so the number is topped at six for any given date. As dates are filling fast, it is best to get in early to secure your time.

What to Bring

Children are invited to bring any special scraps they would like to feed the chickens or put in the compost and/or worm farm, sunscreen and a hat and gentle hands as hens stop laying if everyone is too loud or rough with them.

If it is raining from noon onwards on the day of your attendance, The Garden Project will reschedule due to the elements.

Parents/Guardians are to remain on site with their children and paperwork will be provided for safety reasons. If you have attended a garden workshop before, your details will be on hand.

The Nest Community Inc. is located at 720 South Pine Road, Everton Park. If you would like to keep up to date with other children's workshops, you can email belinda.nestgarden@gmail.com or follow Garden Project @ The Nest Community on Facebook.
