Children's Sensorium – Art, play & mindfulness for a post-pandemic recovery

The Children's Sensorium will run from 19 August through to 8 October 2022 and is a free event designed for kids aged 4 to 11. This interactive exhibition will be held at the RMIT Design Hub Gallery , Level 2, Building 100, RMIT University , Corner Victoria and Swanston Streets, Carlton, and features light, colour, touch, sound, smell and taste to activate children's curiosity, connect them to local Kulin country, and introduce strategies and techniques that support emotional resilience and wellbeing. See here for the full program and more details. By clicking on the highlighted pink/red headings of events you're interested in; you'll be taking to the registration page to make your booking.

The Sensorium is part of the Archives of Feeling exhibition for The Big Anxiety , Melbourne Naarm. It is in response to the significant impacts of the pandemic on the wellbeing and resilience of the children.

The aim here is to improve mental health and wellbeing for children aged 4-11 who are experiencing distress; building on evidence of preventative strategies to support wellbeing. Examples are - mindfulness/embodiment play and emotional intelligence. It uses a strength-based approach and shifts the focus away from pathology. Children are enabled to explore their senses, feelings, thoughts, worries and hopes and to cultivate emotional intelligence and resilience.

The Sensorium draws on themes of nature, and the program has been developed with advice from mental health experts and delivers practical resources through activities and workshops , and information for parents, children and schools to take home. During the exhibition, RMIT Culture will host a range of workshops and activities, including gardening, plants, propagating, mindfulness, mediation, movement, dance, creative play and connecting to Country.
