Here's a neat evening activity for young families this summer – each Saturday from the 6th of November to the 11th of December, there are free outdoor screenings of cartoons and family feature films from 8pm at Piazza Italia, which is located in the heart of Melbourne's 'Little Italy' in the northern part of Argyle Square, in Carlton.
Argyle Square was opened as a public space in 2006. According to Wikipedia, Argyle Square is a joint development between The City of Melbourne and Milan, Italy. The square is surrounded by lush gardens and features a large sundial.
Families are welcomed to bring a blanket and enjoy the upcoming season of features films, which include Pixar's Up on November 13. Up is an acclaimed animated production which received the 'Best Animated Feature' award at the 2010 Academy Awards. This family feature film details the adventures of the aging widow Carl Fredricks, young Russell, an eager Wilderness Explorer and Carl's 'flying house.'
Ice Age 2, the 2006 sequel to the popular animated 2002 feature film Ice Age is screening on November 20. This animated feature film follows Manny, a mammoth, Sid, a sloth, Diego, sabre-toothed tiger and Scat, a squirrel, as they try to survive their environment which is continuing to melt due to the changing weather.
The hit Pixar production Wall-E (2008) is screening on November 27. The titular character of the animated feature film is a robot compactor (Waste Allocation Load Lifter - Earth Class), whose only responsibility is to clean up waste. However Wall-E's existence is turned upside down when he unexpectedly meets Eve (Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator), a robotic probe. This sci-fi adventure animated feature film received the Academy Award for 'Best Animated Feature' at the 2009 Academy Awards.
On the 4th of December revisit the popular 2008 feature film Horton Hears a Who, adapted from the Dr. Seuss book of the same name. Horton, voiced by Jim Carrey, is an elephant who hears the calls of Ned McDodd, the Mayor of Whoville, voiced by Steve Carell. However Ned is of a microscopic world and the inhabitants of Horton's much larger world find it hard believe Horton's tales.
The final film of the season is another Academy Award winner, Ratatouille (2007) , a Pixar animated feature film which follows the budding friendship between Remy, a rat with a passion for cooking and Alfredo Linguini, a bumbling young kid, who is initially hired as a kitchen cleaner, only to become a well-known chef with the help of Remy.
Please note screenings may be cancelled due to adverse weather.
Feature films screen from 8:30pm, however a variety of cartoons will preceded the screening of the main feature from 8:00pm.
