Children's Book Week

Children's Book Week is organised by The Children's Book Council of Australia to celebrate Australian children's literature and foster a love of reading. This year the event will be held from Saturday 20th August to Friday 26th August 2016.

Every year a theme is chosen and this year it is 'Australia! Story Country.' Librarians and teachers like to create an amazing book display, often based on the theme, and usually host a children's book character parade. I have fond memories of making an Alligator Pops costume out of a large old cardboard box and coloured paper as a child. The character was out of Alison Lester's book 'Clive Eats Alligators.'

The shortlist for this year has been announced and includes books in the following categories:
Early Childhood
Older Readers
Younger Readers
Eve Pownall Award for Information Books
Picture Book of the Year

The winners will be announced on Friday 19th August 2016. This year the Book of the Year Awards celebrate their 70th anniversary making it the longest running book awards in the country.

You may like to visit your local library's website to see what activities they have planned. You can purchase merchandise or find out further information from the Children's Book Council of Australia website.
