Celebrate books, Australian authors and illustrators at this year's Children's Book Week from Saturday, 17 August to Friday, 23 August 2024.

Established in 1919, Children 2019s Book Week is the longest-running national literacy initiative in Australia. This year's theme is aptly named "Reading is Magic." While books and stories are fun and invite children's imagination to dive into curious paths, they are specifically important for a child's brain development, language and learning and strengthen relationships between the reader and the listener.

To coincide with the week, one of the events is the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book of the Year Award to:
  • promote quality literature for young Australians by Australians;
  • support and encourage a wide range of Australian writers and illustrators of books for young people aged 0 through 18 and;
  • celebrate contributions to Australian children's literature.

  • The categories of the Awards are:
  • CBCA Book of the Year: Older Readers
  • CBCA Book of the Year: Younger Readers
  • CBCA Book of the Year: Early Childhood
  • CBCA Picture Book of the Year
  • Eve Pownall Award
  • CBCA Award for New Illustrator
