The Art Gallery of South Australia is so much more than paintings hanging on the walls. They run many events with an art focus and participation with hands-on arts activities. There is a lot on offer for families and teenagers with an overview provided here.
START FOR FAMILIES
START is special free program for young children aged 3-12 years and their adults to introduce kids to the world of visual art. It also gives parents an opportunity to share an art experience with their kids. It is held on the first Sunday of the month throughout the year. There is an extensive program for the day and you can join in for part of it or the whole day. Every month there is a new theme. It usually has something to do with the current exhibitions in the gallery or a special event happening in town. They often have guest performers and invited workshop artists.
On the day there is some sort of creative hands-on activity for the kids to do. There could also be storytelling or some performance art show. Children's tours of the Art Gallery are held a few times a day allowing children to observe art with a child's development in consideration. There is always something on in the Sculpture Courtyard Tent. Outside is a good spot to sit and eat your lunch, or take a break and walk through the University grounds and go down to the river bank to relax a while in the outdoors. You can enter the Art Gallery from the rear doors also.
All activities kick off at 11am with the most popular repeated during the day. You can read
the program here about a week before the monthly START event. If it is not posted as yet, you can always read the most recent program to give you an idea of what happens at START. Or on the day, pick up a program at reception and get directions of where to go, as activities are held all over the gallery. There is also a reception desk opposite The Studio and coffee shop downstairs. A reminder, backpacks are not permitted inside, but you can check in large bags at the cloakroom at reception.
THE STUDIO
This is a designated do your own thing space for all ages within the Gallery. It is located next to the bookshop at the rear of the building and is open every day. The only time you cannot use it is when there are visiting school groups. Here kids can rest and do a quiet activity. Children must be supervised at all times when at the studio. They don't mind if the parents bring a coffee over from the coffee shop but it is not a place to eat your lunch. The Studio has been decorated by Melbourne artist Ghostpatrol in his unique interpretation of childhood. It is a good spot to stop and rest a while after walking around the Gallery.
NEO TEENS PROGRAM
Neo, in Italian means new, youthful and fresh. And that is just what the Neo program is all about. Neo is just for teenagers aged 13-17 and is a parent-free zone. Neo is held on a Saturday night every second month. They have special run of house events where the Gallery is open at night just for teens. There is lots of art making, workshops and performances for hundreds of teens who come along. The very best arts people from all over Adelaide come in to lead the art workshops. Teens can join a DJ with a dance party and sometimes live music. They even spotlight some local teen bands.
This is great idea for teens to brush up on social skills outside of school and learn co-operation by participating in the arts events on the night. And yes, there is plenty of staff and security. They even provide some snacks for a fun night out as teens are constantly hungry. Parents could drop their kids off and have dinner out. It's a free program but you must book on email
[email protected] or by phone on 8207 7076
