We had narrowed our selection of places to restaurants which offered Korean Fried Chicken. After a quick Google search, we found the Chicken Institute, a place I have glanced at numerous times while the infamous 891 UNSW bus races towards Central.

Often, I find myself overwhelmed by choice, some restaurants are secretly tucked in the corners of the city and others are bustling with people, the shop unable to contain the demand.

The Chicken Institute, in a quiet corner of Surry Hills, was packed with people on this Saturday night. Luckily, there was outdoor seating at the back of the restaurant which was, at the time, empty and it was a clear cloudless night (or so we thought). We were led to a small wooden table which could just squeeze the two of us. It was a romantic spot, if not for the occasional bathroom door opening and closing.

We were quickly given our menus and some private space to peruse the menu. The menu was quite entertaining, of its own accord.

It was perhaps a given that we had to order some "Chook" (which was how the menu had described it). So, we chose the "Damn good Fried Chicken, spicy salt and lime" which, might I add, was damn good!



The food came quickly and was presented in a can bucket. It was crispy and packed with flavour. Each bite, to both of our hungry stomachs, was tender and delicious.

We also ordered "Something Else" (which was another section of the menu" and chose the "Bibimbap, black rice, lots VEGES, smoked chili and fried egg". It was nothing particularly special but provided a good balance against the fried chicken. It did indeed have lots of VEGES with carrots and brussel sprouts.



I was impressed by the flavoursome fried chicken, which had indeed surpassed all of my expectations. The outdoor seating was at first a quiet romantic spot which sat beneath the stars before more people piled into the restaurant and we were surprised with a drizzle of rain. Luckily, we had finished our meal by this stage and we shuffled into the indoor seating area to pay for our meals, with pronounced difficulty, because of the tight crowded spaces.

Overall, I would definitely recommend their "Chook" and I would return again for some more crispy goodness in their Korean Fried Chicken.
