It was my partner's birthday and I was being picky about where to take him. It had to have quality food obviously, but also the right atmosphere; not too busy but not dead either. Plus he said it had to be somewhere new, which when scouting around can be a bit hit and miss. Fortunately I lucked in when I spied Chianti Bistro tucked in a corner off Queens Parade in Clifton Hill.

Chianti Bistro specialises in familiar Italian dishes prepared with care and served with attention to detail.

Since it was a birthday meal we were going the full three courses. I ordered the buffalo mozzarella, smoky heirloom beetroot and mint. There's something wonderful about biting into buffalo mozzarella that gentle resistance and creamy flavour, yum!

We also had fresh asparagus in cream and bread crumbs cooked al dente.

Mains greeted us with pink ling for my partner and I had cape grim beef cheek, pomme puree with horseradish. Both filling and delicious though I would have liked some vegetables included in both dishes.

Using our second stomach for dessert, we moved onto vanilla rice pudding with roast quince and chocolate parfait, sorbet, honeycomb and mascarpone. Oh my goodness my tummy was in its happy place!

The only draw back was the seating was a little bit too café style rather than full restaurant, but the atmosphere was cosy and everyone was enjoying their meals.

We are adding this one to our 'impress our friends' list.
