The Wonderful Chia Seed

They're tiny: little charcoal coloured, grain-like seeds sitting in their packet, minding their own business, not realising they're a powerhouse of nutrition are what makes chia seeds such a wonder. Pronounced 'cheeya' they don't look up to much, and could easily be mistaken for poppy seeds if you don't look closely. They're more oval shaped, than the round poppy seeds however, and far more superior in nutrients.
What they contain (100g):
Calcium,
Protein: 20.7g
Fibre: 714mg
Vitamins B3 (Niacin), B2 (Riboflavin) and B1 (Thiamine)
More omega 3 content than an average fillet of salmon
What they do:
Expand in water, making you feel fuller for longer, which in turn aids weight loss.
Make water more hydrating because they turn it into electrolytes.
Reduces the risk of heart disease.
You don't need a lot either: 1 tsp of chia seeds is all you really need to make your water more hydrating, up the protein in your salad, or add an extra texture to your porridge. A little goes a long way because of their cool expanding nature, so if you're looking to up your protein intake try a handful of seeds and reap the benefits.
Admittedly chia seeds are only tiny balls of nutrients that I have lived without all my life. However, I like to maintain optimum health, and if these little seeds are capable of all the above, why not give them a try and supplement your diet?
I like to add them to my banana bread in place of poppy seeds, and added to a smoothie once it's blended. See, they're really wonderful little seeds, now how did you cope without them?
