When you live in Melbourne you can't just have one favourite café, you've got to spread the love around. Cheshire Café is one of my top five faves. It's located close to the last stop for the number 11 tram so even those who find themselves at the end of the line in the wilds of Preston can satisfy their big brekkie hunger pains.
Inside it's a cheerful café overlooking a leafy park across the road and another side window where you can watch the outdoor customers enjoying their meals while their happy dogs get pats from passers-by. It has a spacious interior with a generous table for family groups, smaller tables for couples and foursomes and a long high bench where you can perch on a stool and watch the world go by.
Cheshire café adds a sense of fun to its meals with one of its specials called Green Eggs and Ham (Scrambled eggs, green pea smash, grilled German ham and pecorino cheese). Other specials include, Avocado On Rye (dark rye, Persian fetta, charred corn, tomato salsa and chilli oil), or if you are really feeling decadent, Walnut Porridge (butterscotch banana and walnut praline crumble).
If you just want a snack, there are all sorts of sweet temptations at the counter including raspberry donuts, coconut rice bubble slice, muesli slice and various assortment of muffins. As for the coffee, I haven't had a bad one yet.
