When I told my friends I had a spare ticket to see a Katy Perry-inspired show about a bisexual woman's sexual awakening, I could feel them shying away. No takers? Fortunately, the show was a big hit and the lucky mate who did take me up on my offer had a great time. You could even say there were fireworks (pun intended).

With classic hits from Katy Perry's albums Prism, Teenage Dream and the "criminally underrated" Witness, Cherry takes the audience on a hilarious romp through teenage Sarah's Polynesian upbringing and introduces them to her "tuna curry making" dad, long-suffering mum and the mean girls at her high school in Western Sydney.

The Motley Bauhaus - Black Box proved to be a surprisingly intimate venue. At times, there's less than an arm's length between you and the performers whose joyful exuberance and unscripted laughter fill the space bringing with them, an infectious sense of mirth. These are two friends having a good time and I'm here for it.

Written and performed by Sarah Carroll, the semi-autobiographical piece is a fitting tribute to all things Katy. It's also chockas with fun facts about Katy from her full name - Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson - to her suspension from her strict Christian school for humping a tree. (In Katy's defence, she was pretending it was Tom Cruise).

With a striking musical accompaniment by Musical Director Marissa Saroca who intermittently steals the show especially with her powerhouse performance of Unconditionally, Cherry is a must-see for any Katy Perry fans aka Katycats out there.

Q&A with Cherry creator Sarah Carroll
**
What events inspired the show?**I joke that Cherry has been 14 years in the making since the day I discovered Katy's music. The whole show is autobiographical and tracks my own fangirl life as a Katycat and how Katy 'grew up with me' and I'm still supporting her to this day.
**
What do you want the audience to take away from the piece?**Firstly, I just want the audience to leave the theatre feeling like they have been taken on a journey on a cotton candy cloud and have been able to forget about their own life for an hour. Beyond that, I think this show speaks to the fangirl experience and growing pains.

What is it about Katy Perry's music that speaks to your teenage self? Katy's music was always there for me when I needed it most. Lots of her music are self empowerment anthems and I am thankful for that because they helped me believe in myself and keep going - as cheesy as that sounds but I was a lonely teen and I found someone in KP.
