It's Cherry Season and the Granite Belt is home to many orchards busting with ripe, juicy cherries. is conveniently located on the New England Highway, just 10 kms south of Tenterfield. The Savins family grow 20 varieties of cherries on 26 stunning acres overlooking Bluff Rock. It is well sign posted from either direction, with plenty of parking and a great little fruit shop also selling other seasonal stone fruits on the day we stopped in. I could not resist purchasing a kilo of super sweet Empress cherries and a tray of nectarines. Here's my Brandy Cherry Recipe if you're wondering what to do with hundreds of cherries yourself - please let me know how it goes if you try it.

On the way back to the car, we took the children to visit the orchard's chickens and admired the frog statues and imaginative seating around the gardens. I recommend as a great place to stock up on delicious summer cherries, apricots, nectarines, peaches and plums, especially if you're on the road passing by. Alternatively, there are many cherries and other stone fruits for sale along The Summit Fruit Run (Tourist Drive 3), a 12 kilometer drive from Dalveen to Applethorpe. Be sure to stop in at Thulimbah's The Big Apple along the way. Happy cherry nibbling.
