Are you interested in trying Chinese food, but don't want to try such delicacies as chicken feet? Or perhaps, are you a Chinese person, but prefer Westernised Chinese food, such as fried rice, honey chicken, and sweet and sour pork? Well, my friends, I think Cheng's on Fitzroy is for you.
Cheng's on Fitzroy serves up a fusion of Western and Chinese food. The focus is on Chinese food, but the Chinese food is usually cooked with a twist. Some of the highlights at Cheng's on Fitzroy include deep fried prawns with salted egg yolk, deep fried pumpkin with salted egg yolk, sweet and sour pork that remains crispy despite the sauce that is poured over it, crispy duck with cointreau and orange sauce, and curry served inside a pumpkin.
The decor inside Cheng's on Fitzroy is also of a decidedly fusion flavour. There are some traditional Chinese decorations, such as the old-fashioned costumes of emperors and empresses, but there are also some more modernised and Westernised elements as well. A nice touch is the beautiful lamp that hangs from the ceiling, made of panels of clear colourful plastic spraypainted with silhouettes of animals.
If you want to try the flavours of Chinese food without trying the delicacies that are too "out there", Cheng's on Fitzroy is for you. Even though the menu looks small to begin with, you will definitely be left with a big experience by the end of the meal.
