This orchestra has been active since late 1990s. Over the years, it attracts students from many schools as well as young graduates looking to continue their passion for Chinese music. Some of their members had gone to China in order to study Chinese Music full-time, and have since returned here working as instructors and professional musicians.

In 2002 the ensemble won the first prize in Open Category in the biennial National Chinese Music Competition organised by the National Arts Council.

Since 2000, the orchestra had staged many full-scale ticketed concerts. One of the acclaimed concerts, "The Unforgettable Water Splashing Festival", was held at the Singapore Conference Hall, under the baton of Mr Chiang Kum Mun Mike in 2002.

In 2007, the orchestra invited renowned Chinese conductor Mr Hu Bing Xu as the guest conductor for "Play with Hu Bing Xu". In 2009 it collaborated with Taiwan's Miao-Li Youth Chinese Orchestra to perform "Music in Harmony" at The Esplanade.

In celebration of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra's 15th anniversary, a National Chinese Orchestra Marathon was held in February 2012. CSCO was one of the 31 participating orchestras in the nation's ever first marathon, to promote and cultivate the appreciation of Chinese orchestral music locally.
