The building was built in 1884 as a private apartment co-op. With 12 stories, it was named the tallest building in New York until 1899. It later became a hotel and it was located in what was known at the time as the Theater District. The hotel became a staple place for artists to meet and live.

The hotel has a reputation for bad behavior and for creating art. The writer Dylan Thomas died of alcohol poisoning at the and it is also rumored that Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols stabbed his girlfriend while staying at the hotel in 1978.
