Chelsea Beach

Located in Chelsea in the southern suburbs of Melbourne,
is a relaxing setting for your next beach trip with family or friends. With clean, smooth sands and clear water; there's no need to worry about stepping in shells, syringes or jellyfish. The water remains shallow for quite a way out and only gradually deepens, so it's safe to wander. Remember to always stay between the flags, which are generously spaced on busy days.
The amount of people at
fluctuates depending on the weather. On a hot day, it is hard to find somewhere to place your towel, as was the case on
Australia Day in 2010. But on
Australia Day 2011, the mild weather resulted in the beach being all but deserted. The water tends to be cold, so its important to go on a sunny warm day.
The beach is easily accessible by public transport, being right opposite
Chelsea Station on the Frankston train line, which is also home to several bus stops.
The foreshore is located behind the Nepean Highway, where there is a busy shopping strip which boasts a variety of eateries. There are restaurants, cafes, bakeries and even a
Subway; but my personal favourite beach fare is chips from
Chelsea Charcoal Chicken. The shopping strip also has some discount stores and small clothing stores, which are mostly not worth browsing. If you need to pick up some snacks or sunscreen, there is an unmistakably large
Safeway supermarket just behind the shopping strip.
Chelsea has some convenient facilities, with a playground, barbecues and picnic tables just metres away from the sand. However, this area is normally crawling with small children and families enjoying long lunches, so if you're looking for a quiet outing, then stick to the foreshore.
