Although I love going to the theatre, I very rarely pick "classic" plays. The reason is usually because they are never as good as I want them to be. So when I suddenly decided to go and watch Chekov's Three Sisters at
TAP Gallery , I was surprised by my decision. It was the best decision I've made in a long time because this play is captivating, entertaining and beautifully executed.
The play is about three privileged Russian sisters and their dramatic pursuits of love, lust and happiness. The play delves into the idea of finding happiness. It skilfully explains that we are always searching for happiness but we never quite get there because even if we get want we want, there will always be a level of disenchantment and we'll then look for happiness elsewhere.
The sisters face modern day challenges like finding love, marital indiscretion, finding work and tragic loss. Each step of the way, through their growth and experiences I felt like I could relate in one way or another.
The style of TAP Gallery makes is so intimate you feel like you're in amongst the commotion. I was snapped back to reality when it went to intermission and I realised how brilliantly relevant this play is. The story is timeless and the acting superb. The characters are authentic but with a modern flair and the simple yet effective setting made me feel like I had travelled far away.
I laughed and cried, felt hope and despair and I loved every second of it. It's the type of play that stays with you for a long time after you see it. If you're going to do anything in the next week, I recommend it's seeing this play.
