Penfolds is one of Australia's most renowned wine brands and was founded in our local Adelaide. Their Magill Estate Cellar door is located a stone's throw from the CBD and offers not just premium wine tastings, but also an exquisite daytime dining experience at Magill Estate Kitchen.

Its lavender-lined driveway is bound by hundreds of grape vines; the beautiful structures certainly set the scene for a lovely day. We dined on a Sunday afternoon and indulged in their chef's menu for $98 pp. This took us on a culinary journey spanning 4 courses.

Starters

lost loaf sourdough, house churned butter

Is it really fine dining if you aren't greeted with a hunk of sourdough and a generous side of salted butter? The crust had a gentle crunch and the bread was soft and chewy, creating a perfect backdrop for the ribbons of butter that melted into golden pools, and nestled in the pillowy nooks of warm sourdough.

crumbed fish sando, wasabi tartare

There's an art to deep fried food and the culinary scientists have perfected it with this fish. The fillets were expertly cooked and maintained that balance between crunchy but not unctuous, whilst preserving the natural flavour of the fish. The lettuce strands offered a refreshing counterpoint. Personally, I would have wanted a stronger dose of wasabi in the sauce.

woodfire abrolhos scallop, yellow curry butter, coconut

A must-order. These scallops were tender and the sauce was incredibly flavoursome.

Entrees
pork belly slider, smoked pineapple, coriander

Crispy pork belly pellets mixed with diced red onion and sweet pineapple. I enjoyed the savoury-sweet flavour profile and the melt-in-your-mouth lard sandwiched between toasted brioche buns. I did think there could have been more filling included.

burrata, caramelised onion, crispy kalettes, pine nuts

One of our favourite dishes of the meal. Every component contributed to the harmonious plate - the creamy burrata, the sweetness of the onions, and the snap, crackle and pop of the nuts and kalettes.

pork sausage with pickled cabbages and mustard

A special dish that wasn't included in their regular menu. Very juicy.

Main
woodfire icon porterhouse 300gm

Unfortunately, the steak was a bit of a letdown for us as it was served barely warm. I suspect it may have been our fault since our server could see we were quite full, and were helping our stomachs to pace themselves. The cook, however, was a perfect medium rare.

Side
triple fried potatoes, chimichurri

I found the potatoes were inconsistent, with some quite greasy and just an oily sponge, whilst other pieces were golden and crispy. Foodies who enjoy heavier sides will enjoy the dollops of sour cream and bacon bits.

Dessert
tahitian vanilla bean crème brulee

The creme brulee was a lovely finish to our meal. The custard was creamy and lush, and the sugar crust shattered effortlessly with a knock of our spoons.

For an extra $70pp, you can indulge in their standard wine pairing or 100pp for their luxury range. The next time you want to indulge in a memorable meal, consider Magill Estate Kitchen.
