Having spent the last few years living abroad I now wish to rediscover my home city of Sydney to keep that 'travelling feeling' and share my findings with those that might want a bit of inspiration.

Tasty, friendly, reasonably priced
If you are on the hunt for a traditional Chinese menu in Sydney, then Chef's Gallery is probably not for you. Spinach noodles, crispy eggplant and lychee duck are three unlikely items on your local Chinese's specials board, but feature amongst the strong lineup of offerings at this CBD restaurant.

Making a selection from the expansive menu is probably the most difficult thing to do at this restaurant. You are aided by photos of each menu item, but in truth these hinder rather than help as everything just looks just so tasty it is almost impossible to choose. Looking around it was comforting to see so many tables with 4 dishes or more between 2, packing the remainders into takeaway containers to enjoy the next day. We were not the only decision-challenged diners!



Settling on the Pork and Pork Floss Sliders ($16.90 for 3), Signature Lychee Duck ($29.90 for half), spicy beef and spinach noodle soup ($17.90), Peking Duck Roti ($17.90 for 6 pieces) and Crispy Eggplant ($15.90 for approx 9-10 pieces); its needless to say that lunch the next day was catered for.

Ever dish was delicious in its own way. The spinach noodles were unique; flavourful with a wonderful smooth texture. Looking around the restaurant it seemed that others agreed - nearly every table had ordered a serving of these. Another standout was the crispy eggplant for it was a surprise. Expecting a tempura-like flavour I was shocked to take a bite and encounter sweet caramelisation. They subsequently got held until closer to the end of our meal and would not have been out of place amongst the dessert items. Beautiful, but sweet. If you are having any difficulty convincing your child to eat vegetables then feed them this dish and it will surely have them singing a different tune by the end, albeit you may have a sugar-high on your hands.

The beautiful food was well complemented by smart decor and friendly, efficient service. I must admit that I am always pleased to have my water glass refilled without asking (fine-dining venues exempt from this statement): all part of the service here - a novelty in Sydney!

If you are craving unique flavours, good service and smart surrounds; do yourself a favour and visit Chef's Gallery where you will be treated to contemporary Chinese dining at its best.
