Cheeky Monkey Brewery & Cidery was opened to the public after lengthy delays in April 2012. In just one year of operation the new establishment has already become immensely popular with a host of awards and a full car park nearly every weekend.
Situated on Caves Road, Cheeky Monkey Brewery & Cideries design mimics a high end country retreat style building. It has a long glass and wooden face opening out on to a verandah overlooking their man made lake.
Inside the premise there's eye-catching attention to detail put into everything from the roof lights to the bar. Sculptures and artwork are scattered over the walls and throughout the expansive casual restaurant area and there's no shortage of interesting bits and pieces outside either.
After just over a year of operation Cheeky Monkeys beers have already started picking up accolades from around the country. They have four permanent beers including the Hagenbeck IPA - a super hoppy Belgian style brew.
They also brew an ever changing single batch beer as well as pear and apple ciders which - by my cider drinking friends accounts - are good, but they were expecting more from the first "cidery" in the Margaret River region.
As for the food, one thing that divides opinion is changing menus. When we first came down they had an amazing and very cheap chicken burger, but on our last trip it had disappeared from the menu.
Nonetheless the sticky ribs I ordered on this occasion were pretty good while the aioli served with the fish & chips was one of the best we've ever had. While not quite up to the same food standards as the likes of Eagle Bay Brewery, Cheeky Monkey certainly isn't doing any damage to the reputation of the region.
It would be nice to install a second point of sale or table service for food ordering unless they plan on becoming less popular (which in business terms is not a smart idea) due to how busy they are on weekends, the line can take a while if you're there around midday.
Cheeky Monkey also features a nice walk trail around the lake, fireplace, TVs and a huge, very colourful kids playground. Pair this with the beer, cider and food on offer and Cheeky Monkey is a great spot for families, groups, mates and couples to sit back, relax and enjoy the atmosphere.
