Date nights can be a minefield, especially if you can't think up an interesting and memorable activity on a budget. Driving to Geelong however, certainly satisfies those two criteria. From Melbourne, Geelong is only approximately an hour away, especially if the traffic is reasonable. As a result, it's one of those road trips you can comfortably do on less than 1 tank of petrol perfect in this current environment when petrol costs about $1,000 per litre (ok...slight exaggeration).

Dinner wise, in Geelong, there are eateries to match every budget. For those of you on the more limited budget, I recommend the Corio Roadhouse Cafe. Although this may look like your average diner, complete with the quintessential diner traits flatscreen tv hanging from the ceiling in the dining area, along with basic tables and chairs the food, while still basic diner cuisine, is delicious and made with love. Furthermore, the menu is extensive and reasonably priced generously stuffed burgers of all descriptions, the more finger-style food such as jaffles, sandwiches, thick shakes and much more. Everything on the menu is under $10, except for a plate of ribs for $15. As a result, it's possible to finance your entire date dinner for two for under $30.

For those who don't want to eat in the diner, a great, ambient and enjoyable idea is to drive the food and yourselves down to the beach, and either sit in the car or on the sand (depending on the weather), and munch away. At night time, the Geelong beach is well lit, but still private not many people are around except around the various other restaurants, so it's possible to get some privacy for a cuddle without people watching and commenting. A relaxed leisurely stroll along the sand is the perfect after-dinner activity.

The whole point of a road-trip date is not necessarily to do something you can't do in Melbourne. What is so memorable about a road-trip date such as this one, is that by filling the night with activity, it distracts from the fact that you're not spending much money. The whole point of a fancy restaurant, apart from the food and the ambience, is the focus is on the prices you're paying for dinner. When you don't want to draw attention to the amount that is being spent, distract.

As you can see, a successful, memorable and enjoyable date night can be had on any budget, even a tiny one. It's all about ingenuity.
