Stop, it's hamper time.



Hampers make great gifts. Whether you're organising a party with lucky door prizes, or going to one for a special occasion, hampers can be customised in any way to suit your needs.

Around the time of Christmas, especially, is when you start to see shelves and shelves filled with all sorts of hampers. They are not cheap, though. So if you're on a budget, but wanting to make that million dollar hamper, then perhaps consider the following options.

1. Hunt for unused, unopened things

Hunt unused, unopened items that you may have lying around your home. I'm notorious for buying makeup that I know don't need. Knowing that an eyeshadow palette lasts for ages and that I only ever use earthy tones don't stop me from buying it. So I do have quite a collection at home. You may be the same with other things, but when you're willing to let it go, throw it in the hamper.

2. Junk shop is your best friend

I absolutely love junk shops, but you really have to be careful. Decide how much you want to spend and stick with your budget. Trust me, it's extremely easy to overspend in junk shops. Also, it's sometimes very hard (and almost impossible) to find good quality, expensive looking things there and don't always assume that everything in the junk shop is cheap. Look for things like Belgium chocolates and English shortbreads as there is an abundance of them.

3. Daiso

I've decided to dedicate one section to Daiso because of its awesomeness. With Daiso stores popping up all around the place, hopefully there's one near you.

Everything in this shop is $2.80 and their products range include cosmetics, cookware, food and beverages, homeware, kitchenware, lifestyle, personal care, stationery and toys. Here, you get great quality bargains, but be careful with what you pick. Choose things that would normally cost more than $2.80 in other shops.

4. Give your freebies away

You may be buying moisturiser from Myer and as part of their promotion, you are entitled to a free gift pack after spending a certain amount. If your freebies are samples, then keep them for yourself. If, however, they are full sized products that may not be of use to you, chuck it in the hamper.

5. Regifting

So I'm not a big fan of regifting and I think I'm a bit too paranoid about getting caught. However, if you do have unwanted gifts sitting at home and you're on a budget, maybe regift as a last resort.

Just make sure they are still in their original packaging, less than a year old, unused and would cost more than $20 to buy. If it's not something that you would buy yourself, then let it sit in the cupboard.

6. It's all about the packaging

So you've gathered all your goodies and now it's time to put it all together.

Rather than using boring old wicker baskets, glam it up by using pretty storage boxes. The trick is to find beautiful storage boxes on the cheap. Daiso has lots of storage solutions and you may be able to find something to suit your needs.

Don't fill the bottom with tissue paper or cellophane. Fill it with cheap chocolates and things that don't look so glamorous.

Showcase your expensive looking products by putting them on the top and around the side where people can see.

Wrap it all up using cellophane and you can find them at junk shops for a dollar or two. Take care to choose the colour depending on the occasion. When in doubt, just go with clear.

Lastly, use beautiful, large, shiny ribbons or bows to decorate it. If you don't have any lying around at home, you're probably better off going to the junk shop. Keep away from newsagents or specialty gift stores as they are often overpriced.

Now look at your finished product and admire your million-dollar hamper.
