If you are looking for some interesting, easy things to do this holidays that won't break the bank try out these ten ideas for cheap and easy school holiday activities. Let us know if you have other suggestions.

Bushwalking at Mt Coot-tha Forest. There is a range of different walks to suit all fitness and experience levels. Pack a hat, some water and maybe a snack and take advantage of the cooler weather to do some bushwalking. Show your kids the beauty of the bush without having to travel very far. Some great walks are the Aboriginal Art Trail (1km circuit) and the Ghost Hole Track (.6km). See here for details of the walks available.

Have a dinner picnic in your local park. Pack a picnic or get some takeaway and head to a park in the late afternoon. Stay and play as the sun sets and eat dinner at twilight or take some torches and eat in the dark. It's a bit like camping but without all the effort. The kids will love it and it's easy.

Catch the train to Ipswich and go to the Art Gallery. Ipswich Art Gallery always has interesting things on with a special focus on kids' activities. This holidays there is an exhibition of contemporary Art called Art & Australia. With weird and wonderful things such as melted fridges this is bound to keep the kids entertained. In addition there are several kids activities including the Climbing Web, crafted by Evelyn Roth Festival Arts. This is is a large-scale multi coloured crocheted net suspended from the gallery ceiling where kids aged 3-12 can climb, roll, dive and spin. For details about the gallery see here

Catch a Brisbane CityCat and go all the way to the end. Start anywhere and travel the whole length of the ferry route or pick a spot you've never been to and get off mid way. There are lots of great parks near the ferry terminals such as Guyatt Park at St Lucia, Orleigh Park at West End, New Farm Park, Mowbray Park and more, including South Bank.

Go to QAGOMA and the State Library. This is always a great day out. There are always interesting things to see and the kids can have some fun roaming the green space nearby while the adults have a coffee. This holidays Yayoi Kusama's Obliteration Room is back at GOMA and there is a series of drawing activities designed by Michael Parekowhai.

Go on a free tour of Brisbane City Hall. Learn more about the art, architecture and history of the Brisbane City Hall. There are six tours a day and, while they are free, bookings are required. See here for details. You can also do a special tour of the Clock Tower. The Tower is 92 metres high, is accessible by a beautiful hand operated lift and provides great views of the city. These tours operate every fifteen minutes and are also free. See here for details.

Go to one of the beaches that are close to Brisbane - Nudgee, Shorncliffe, Sandgate, Redcliffe, Bribie Island. Many of these beaches are only half an hour away from the city. Take a picnic or buy fish and chips and you can paddle in the water or play on the beach or at nearby parks. It's a great mini holiday that doesn't take too much money or time.

See a movie. Often seeing a movie requires taking out a small personal loan but if you look carefully there are some cinemas that offer very cheap tickets. Try Cineplex with theatres at Southbank, Hawthorne, Bulimba and Victoria Point. Adult tickets are $8.50 and kids are $6.50 plus it's even cheaper on Tuesdays but I advise you to book. United Cinemas (the old El Dorado) at Indooroopilly also have cheap tickets especially on Tuesdays. Palace Cinemas are offering family deals over the holidays and if you are a member at the Rosalie Cinebar or Dendy you also get some great deals.

Visit the Queensland Maritime Museum. This may be one of the more expensive activities on the list with adult admission $12 and kids at $8, but it provides hours of entertainment. Explore a navy ship from the 1940s, a steam tug from the 1920s, as well as a range of smaller historic boats. See the Lighthouse Gallery, learn more about maritime history in the library and about the history of women at sea. See here for more details.

Visit Fort Lytton. Built in the nineteenth century this is one of several coastal fortifications built along Australia's coast to safeguard shipping lanes and ports from possible enemy raids. It was key to Brisbane's defence until the 1930s and is regarded as the birthplace of Queensland's military history. It is free to visit on Sundays or you can make a special booking and pay a small fee to visit on weekdays. There are tours and special activities that helps you experience the history of the site. There are two special school holiday programs, Raiders of the Lost Fort and Holders of the Fort where archaeologists and actors will introduce kids to the fort. See #opening_hours ">here for more details.
