Local Broadway talents wow with impressive performance

A new Broadway musical comedy has arrived in Australia and it's nothing like you have seen before. Witty, wild and filled with surprising, crazy twists, It Shoulda Been You takes you to the most outrageous wedding you will ever go to.

Presented by Chatswood Musical Society, the musical revolves around the wedding of a Jewish bride and a Catholic groom. With the bride's overbearing mother coming face-to-face with the groom's hypocritical mother, along with the bride's ex-boyfriend crashing the party, the wedding day soon turns into a tangled mess and unfolds in ways you could never imagine.

Set on the wedding day of Rebecca and Brian, the musical began with introducing Jenny, sister of the bride and also the main heroine. Jenny is not the typical heroine you would see in movies, plays or musicals. Jenny is a little plump, sort of pretty, kind of sexy, but never quite as beautiful as society deems. It Shoulda Been You explores the dynamic of sibling rivalry, amongst themes such as religion, sexuality and love. It got me thinking that even though we have always been encouraged to develop individualities, how often are we the subject of comparison or judgment under someone else's microscope?

I strongly recommend not reading up on the plot prior to attending, because then you realise how strong the character development is and how much you are drawn to each character when it's their time to shine. Although at the beginning I struggled to figure out who's who and how they relate to each other, that subsided fairly quickly.

The cast has to be some of the most talented actors and actresses in Australia. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from a local Sydney theatre company but after watching it, I was in awe of the abundance of Broadway talents we have here. Whether you like musical or not, be prepared to be treated to some of the best vocals you can find.

Performing at North Sydney's Independent Theatre, It Shoulda Been You is guaranteed to keep you on your toes up right until the end. The performance runs for 90 minutes with no intermission, and ticket prices are $45 for adults and $40 for concessions. You can find the next performance times below and purchase tickets here.
