Deliciously Charlie Lovett
Crows Nest is a busy northern Sydney suburb where businesses and retailers compete for the mighty dollar. In the midst of this hectic activity, numerous cafes and restaurants flourish offering replenishment and a boost before workers venture back to their demanding world.
Charlie Lovett offers a different establishment to many of the modern ventures nearby. While it sits at the busy intersection of Willoughby Road and Albany Streets, with cars that hurtle along this thoroughfare, the restaurant inside is a more serene vibe.
My two companions and I take a seat near the corner window and absorb the atmosphere of this interesting cafe. It has an earthy appeal with lots of wooden benches and tables. It is open-plan, so wherever a customer sits, one can look out over the streetscape. This is a place to chill out, read the newspaper or catch up with friends.
While I relax sipping on the delectable mango smoothie, I notice the bags of coffee positioned on a nearby shelf. In my naivety, I ask the waitress about Charlie Lovett and "his" signature coffees. She smiled and revealed that there is no Charlie Lovett - "We are all Charlie Lovett", she enthusiastically explained. Charlie Lovett is a franchise, with six other similar cafes in Sydney and another two in Victoria.
Returning to one of the main reasons I visited Charlie Lovett - the mango smoothie. The smoothie was presented in a novel glass mug. I enjoyed this on my first visit and it still impresses me. I convinced my companion to have the same. We both agreed that this was one of the tastiest smoothies we have ever tried.
Our slices soon arrived. One companion ordered the Pain au Chocolat which was lovely. My other companion chose the Dark Chocolate Brownie which was very dense and very nice. I chose the Strawberry and Rhubarb Slice which was delicious.
