Charcoal Chicken @ Stables

On hot days when you subsist on yoghurt and fruit all day long, the cool change sees appetites rising. That's when thoughts turn to the friendly neighbourhood charcoal chicken and for me that's the one in the Stables Shopping Centre. This is not the first time we've had takeaway from this place but it never occurred to me to review the experience. Probably because Charcoal Chicken is everywhere and they all look and smell the same. But as I dig into the succulent meat I realize this here's no ordinary CC and that's when I decided it deserved a closer look.
The place is always crowded and that's always a good sign. I've seen people wait patiently with expressionless faces as the girls behind the counter go about filling orders and working the till. They are quite efficient at what they do and show signs of recognition when they spot regulars. One of them is quite clear that I like my quarter chicken with the drumstick on. I like that she remembers this titbit about me.
My other favourite is the chicken avocado salad although if that's sold out I'm happy to settle for the Greek salad. Then there are the souvlaki wraps, burgers, and schnitzel dinners that I honestly haven't really gone for. I'm quite content with my quarter chicken, salad, and borrowed chips. They also have fried chicken packs, charcoal packs, and schnitzel packs that come in various sizes to feed one person or a family. Family deals come in under $20 and under $33 varieties. I suppose you get to choose depending on the size of your family or the collective appetites that come into play.
They have a fine selection of burgers and that is something I haven't really seen in other chicken joints. Top of the heap is the $8.95 Rocko's 100% Beef Burger and the Double Breast Chicken Burger. The beef burger has cheese, bacon, egg, lettuce, and tomato doused in some mysterious sauce that works just fine with the lot. Then there is Giorgio's 100% beef burger which is about $2 cheaper. Pay a dollar more and you get the Bali beef burger which has an added slice of pineapple to give it that tropical edge.
On the side they have baked pumpkin, corn on cob, roast potatoes, garlic potatoes, chips and gravy, baked vegetables, and peas. You can pick your favourite combination to accompany your chicken or roast beef. Dessert selection includes rice pudding and chocolate ripple. I'm having my chocolate ripple even as I'm typing and it's as good as always.
have it in writing on their walls and on their menu that all their chicken are accredited free range and cooked in cholesterol free oil. Though I can't vouch for this, their food does taste good and does not leave you feeling thirsty like you just crawled out of the desert and are still having nightmares about it. Their burgers are flame grilled and made of halal meat. The salads are always fresh and crispy.
They are open 9am – 9pm seven days a week. You can phone in your orders and your pack will be waiting to be picked up all nice and warm. The servings are rather generous and there's usually enough and more to go around. The best thing is that it's not just about chicken. The salads, potatoes, dim sims, baked vegetables, and dessert lets you have a more or less well-rounded meal.
