Opening just five weeks ago, this is just what Double Bay needs. Immediately I am warmly greeted by the restaurant supervisor, who then introduces me to the owner and Head Chef, Bruno Da Motta. Bruno has been here in Australia 10 years and previously at Crow's Nest's BAHBQ restaurant. He saw the opportunity in this prize location opposite the Cosmopolitan Cafe in Double Bay and snapped it up.
The decor has a warm inviting atmosphere with soft leather banquettes, timber flooring and sprigs of greenery. Amber bulbs shed a flattering sultry glow, providing an intimate atmosphere in the evening.
The menu is derived from traditional Southern Brazilian fare. The Churrasco meat extravaganza, if you choose it, will begin with the waiter bringing long skewers of churrasco fired meats such as fillet mignon, sirloin, roast beef, roast pork, whole chicken hearts, lamb, spicy sausages and a range of seafood. Perfectly charcoaled and burnt fiercely on the outside, then sliced to reveal mouth watering pinkness, tasting supremely good. You will soon feel at home with the ritual, obeying the cue to spear the meat with your fork to ease its landing on your plate. The chunks of different types of meat will keep on coming until you beg for mercy. At Char & Co meat feels like a guilty sin and to some it may be, but to meat lovers it is pure heaven.
They also offer lighter meals for those just wanting to graze, or don't want to eat meat at all. You could try the Ceviche Do Rei (fresh raw Kingfish cured in valencia orange, avocado with cassava crisps) $19.00.
I personally always feel like a baby dinosaur in these type of restaurants. The aromas and the comfort feeling I get from barbecued meats makes my heart sing. I always overdo it and rejoice in my coma laden meat feast, wallowing in the warm feeling of not having to move but to sip another cocktail.
Whatever you may fancy, keep in mind that it won't cost you an arm and a leg to satisfy your carnal appetite for the best barbecued meats or just a great meal. Char and Co has a very affordable menu unlike some of the other restaurants in Double Bay, that may fit the title of 'Double Pay'.
This is a great place to come with friends and ideal for celebrations, open until midnight so check it out soon.
