Everyone loves a good steak, right? Well, the carnivores and omnivores among us, anyway (vegetarians and vegans may want to look away now if they have a beef with this). And those who like their red meat want to know where they can find "veally good" steaks. Ones from the topside, you might say.

So look no further than Char Char Bull in Fremantle. It's just picked up another Gold Plate Award for best steakhouse. That makes it three golds in the past 10 years, something only two other restaurants have done before.

If you don't know what the Gold Plate Awards are, they've been running for the past 47 years and highlight top-notch hospitality hotspots. And in another aside, Char Char Bull was one of only two Freo restaurants to make the grade this year. The Copper Chimney in South Fremantle won "best licensed Indian".

Char Char Bull is located at Fremantle's Fishing Boat Harbour and, given the abundance of seafood in the area, it's made a name by doing something different – namely, serving up steaks. Yes, you can get seafood and plenty of other things on the menu but the restaurant has staked its claim on scotch fillet, rib eye, porterhourse, eye fillet and T-bone.

Aside from the Gold Plate win, Foxtel's LifeStyle FOOD Channel deemed Char Char Bull as having Western Australia's best steak for the third year running in the I Love Food Awards.

Managing director Brenden Jones took over the business 2½ years ago and has built on the restaurant's solid reputation, sourcing tender, flavoursome steaks from suppliers to deliver premium chargrilled prime beef.
"Part of the success is also knowing our location," he says. "The area is renowned for seafood so we also have fresh local fish, oysters and mussels on the menu, treated with the care it deserves. It's all about delivering the best of the land and sea, while also having wonderful ocean views."

Brenden says customers and suppliers "twisted his arm" to enter the Gold Plate Awards. "So to actually win the category is wonderful recognition for all the work done by our team," he said. "We believed in the business and continued to invest into growing the existing concept, which is something that doesn't always happen when a restaurant changes ownership."

Char Char Bull has also recently between granted a new liquor license, allowing for cocktail functions that take in harbour views. The restaurant is open seven days for lunch and dinner.
