Chapultepec park is one of the biggest parks within a city in America. With over 680 hectares (1682 acres) chapultepec houses an array of amusement installations and cultural buildings, including museums, amusement parks, lakes, botanical gardens, cultural buildings, a zoo and the national auditorium. This park is located at about 5 km from Mexico city`s main square.

The park has been used as a destination for pleasure purposes since ancient times, when the Aztec emperors made it their favorite destination for retreat. In post-Columbian times, a castle (Castillo De chapultepec) was built to serve as a military academy and as the house of state for their governors. GIven the great amount of green vegetation and trees, this park provides pure oxygen to the inhabitants and also serves as a noise reductant for this megalopolis.

The park comprises three sections, of which the first is the most visited by natives and tourists. Many people crowd this section every weekend, as it contains most of the parks attractions and amusements installations, including the city`s zoo, museums of anthropology, natural history, national history, modern art and the castle. All of this installations occupy nearly one third (270 hectares) of the park. It is easy to reach any of this installations through several passageways distributed through¡hout the park.

The second section of the park contains a big lake (lLago Mayor), into which there is a big fountain (the the largest in the whole park and Latin America). It contains jogging trails that people visit and use every day. The trails among the trees are utilized for other recreational past times, such as gymnastics, karate, jog, etc. It is estimated that over 1000 people jog here in a single day.

This section contains three museums; El Papalote (Kite), which is a children`s museum; the technological museum and the museum of Natural History. On this section is where the amusement park (Chapultepec Magic) is. Here you may find children`s attractions, family attractions and extreme attractions. You can buy a pass to this amusement park for 90 pesos (7.50 Australian dollars) which allows you to use 30 of the parks attractions.

The third section is just near the third, just to the west of it and it`s the least crowed since it only contains wild life and trees. It comprises nearly 250 hectares of the whole park and the main activities include hosebackriding and archery.

People can gain access to the park for free. The entrance to the museums is free for students and teachers and there is a free entrance for people and tourist only on Sundays. If paying during weekdays, the entrance cost goes from 50-60 Mexican pesos (4-5 Australian dollar). You can buy your food in the park`s restaurants or you can bring your own food and have a picnic in the park.

Most of the park is crowded with trees, of which most of them are Ahuehuete tress, which is a kind of tree that can live hundreds of years. The oldest tree in the park is an ahuehuete trree which is over 700 years old. Wildlife ranges from squirrels to possums (kind of marsupial), birds, rabbilts, geese...among other small animals. None of them are dangerous to people.
