While Chapel Street certainly has a wide variety of options for the weekend bruncher, sometimes it's those tucked away places just off Chapel where you'll find a gem of a place.

So sneak away from the crowd and duck down a side street to enjoy one these great morning spots.

Tyranny of Distance 147 Union St, Windsor
(03) 9525 1005
Calling themselves a cafe and lubritorium, it's a tribute to the days when this dining venue was once a petrol station. Located on Union St, it's a top spot to enjoy a great coffee and a big of sunshine. It's open and airy and probably one of the few places left in Melbourne where a smoker doesn't have to duck outside for a cigarette if they were so inclined. However to be honest, nobody seemed inclined to smoke.

We tried a more traditional breakfast option of two poached eggs with grilled mushrooms and tomato (pictured above) as well as a zucchini and corn fritter stack with wilted spinach, bacon and a poached egg (below).

In the early evenings, the location also makes a great spot to catch up with mates as it offers a Happy Hour from 4-7 where you can have a drink and catch up without feeling like you're in a bar environment.

Ladro 162 Greville St, Prahran
(03) 9510 2233
Located on Greville St, this place is ideal for those sleepy eyed weekenders as it only offers brunch on weekends starting from 10am. While Ladro has already established themselves as a great place for wood fired pizzas, you'll find a breakfast menu that isn't bogged down by too many options and clearly divided into what's important when you're half asleep and in need of food and a caffeine hit; Organic eggs, Not eggs, Sweet brunch and Drinks.

We tried the Italian green eggs and ham consisting of two poached organic eggs on grilled ciabatta, salsa verde and speck as well as the chipolatas on chunky polenta chips with caramelised onion. Both devoured with a thumbs up.

It's also important to note that Ladro, while serving up some great fare, also does their share to give back. On Mondays they offer the option for patrons to BYO wine and the five dollar corkage surcharge is donated to the Prahran Mission.

You'll also find that this venue offers up something you certainly don't see everywhere; they sell a compost for your garden made of the "chicken bones, carrot tops, pizza crusts, pork skins, egg shells," etc all go into their bio-composter creating a nutrient rich $2 bag of goodness that any gardener would appreciate.

Two Lost Boys 20/2 Maddock Street Windsor
(03) 9939 9313
Located just around the corner from Windsor train station, Two Lost Boys opens bright and early at 6:30 am (handy for those needing a decent cup of morning coffee before catching the train.) It also offers an all day breakfast menu with a wide variety of options certain to please everyone.

We tested out a few of the sweeter breakfast options on the menu and weren't disappointed. Their coconut quinoa porridge was an atypical take on the usual porridge spin (and a great option for the gluten mindful) with dried fruit compote, mixed nuts and cinnamon spice. We also tried the lemon and ricotta pancakes with vanilla marcapone, slivered almonds and date molasses.

The portions won't leave you hungry afterwards, however we did manage to squeeze in a bit of one of their delicious gourmet brownies which we're told are rather popular (and understandably so!) This Oreo biscuit brownie was soft, fudgy and absolutely everything a chocoholic could ask for.

The very thing that paired with a stellar cup of coffee would make a bad day disappear.

So next time you find yourself on Chapel, don't forget the delicious options that just off the beaten path and give one of these three a go.
