My friend is accustomed to my insatiable appetite, especially on weekends, so she suggested brunch at Chaos Cafe in Neutral Bay. I have been to Neutral Bay on numerous occasions and I had never heard of Chaos Cafe.

Chaos Cafe is located opposite the mega Woolworth supermarket car park, next to a tiny laneway that leads the busy Military Road. Despite the cute little blackboard stands and graffiti-style signs, I still managed to miss it completely. My friend asked me to follow a multi-coloured mosaic path.

Inside the cafe's décor looked quite colourful with all the mis-matched with hand-painted wooden chairs. Somehow it reminded me of a Mexican restaurant crossed with a child care centre. The atmosphere was casual and relaxed. The shaded alfresco area at the front is the perfect spot to soak up some sun rays, linger and watch the world pass through.

I examined the menu with care, and to be honest, it looked quite ordinary. So why is my friend taking me here?

The answer appeared when a waitstaff carried out a large plate with 3 gigantic cricket-ball sized patties stacked tall with bacon stripes. My eyes widened and my interest surfaced immediately. I, of course, intercepted the waitstaff before he could return to the kitchen and politely inquired the name of the humongous dish, while my friend sat across from me grinning like a cheshire cat sipping her latte.

The waitstaff was very friendly and informed us that it was Chaos Cafe's most popular signature dish - the Corn Fritters and he highly recommended it for first-timer.Without a hesitation, we ordered the Corn Fritters and a Tuna Potato Cake Salad to balance the diet.Diet is a word that is banned from this place.

I could not contain my surprise when my tuna potato cake "salad" arrived. It was definitely not your ordinary salad with loose salad leaves and bits and pieces of potato and tuna garnishes.

This was the actual description on the menu: Tuna Potato Cake Salad $18.60 (Two tuna cakes, mixed lettuce, avocado, tomato with balsamic vinegar). Doesn't it sounded healthy and perfectly balanced?

What it did not specify was the actual size of the tuna cakes. What placed in front of us were 2 huge cricket-ball sized crumbed cake patties with heaps with garden salad, diced tomato, fresh bean sprouts and a huge scoop of guacamole! All drizzled in a tangy light sweet chili sauce.

It was OMG at this brazen spectacular sight and I love a plentiful serving size.

The tuna potato cakes were absolutely amazing. It was freshly-made, deep fried in a light crispy coating and I can assure you, the kitchen did not skimp on the ingredients. Together with the creamy guacamole, sweet chili, it was a solid feed all the way.

As for the salad ...well, who focuses on the salad when you are enjoying delicious colossal tuna potato cakes in front of you.

While we were busily tucking into our 'salad' (it sounded healthier), the hulk-sized corn fritters ($16.40) arrived. There were 3 of them! Each looked like they were bursting with goodness.

These corn fritters were deep-friend, crispy and were placed on top of rocket, tomato salsa salad and guacamole. 2 crispy fried bacon stripes dangled on top of the fritters. It was a amazing-looking dish.

It tasted a bit doughy compared with the tuna potato cake and the batter was slightly thicker. However it was very moreish with the golden crispy coating and bacon stripes.

We tried our hardest, but we could not finish the gigantic meal. It seemed that we barely touched both dishes. No food goes to waste when I am around - we asked the food to be packed.

They are going to be a nice picnic meal in the afternoon after our coastal walk.

I think Chaos Cafe provides the best value brunch in Sydney. The portion sizes are super generous with a reasonable price, considered that is unusual for the posh North Shore area.

Chaos Cafe is well and truly a hidden gem in Neutral Bay and it is the perfect place to chill out over the long weekend!
