Located along Field Street in Chinatown, Chao's Bistro Adelaide branch bills itself on offering Banh Mi (Vietnamese Meat Roll) in a different way. It was popular, there was a crowd of a decent size when we visited.

The main attraction of the restaurant is their Banh Mi Chao (Skillet Hot Plate) dishes, in which the “filling” is served on a hot plate. The Chao’s Combo provided a delectable meal featuring wagyu beef, meat ball, sausage, homemade pate and a fried egg. The meat ball was juicy, and the slices of wagyu beef were not tough. We liked that the sausage was of a good size with a delectable smoky flavour. For those concerned about the taste of the pate, it was not too strong.

Accompanying the meats were chips, salad and a bread roll to enjoy with the ingredients. The salad had a tangy flavour from the dressing and pickled vegetables. It was a good foil to the other ingredients.

Along with Banh Mi Chao, the restaurant offers more familiar Vietnamese dishes. The flesh of the chicken in the Garlic Butter Fried Chicken Rice was juicy, and the crisp skin set it off nicely. It had a delightful garlicy flavour from the garlic butter spooned on it. The rice was light and fluffy with a delectable, savoury flavour.

Served with the dish was chilli sauce and the same salad that accompanied their Banh Mi Chao dish. The spiciness of the chilli sauce was quite mild and was served warm.

Compared to the Fried Taro Rice Cake offered at Pho Doan Vien , the one offered here had a firmer texture. It was fried sufficiently to give the exterior a nice crunch. Preserved radish scattered over the dish added a hint of tanginess. The eggs cooked with the rice cakes had a light texture, and the pickled vegetables had a nice crunch.

Soy sauce and chilli dipping sauces came with the dish. Take care with the chilli sauce as it has a potent spicy kick.

The restaurant had a modern feel with a good amount of seating space. If you are looking for a place offering Banh Mi different from the norm, be sure to give Chao’s Bistro a visit.
