An annual cultural event not to be missed, Chanukah is a community celebration of the Jewish festival of lights. A project of Chabad Brisbane and Brisbane City Council, it is held in the heart of the city at Redacliff Place on Sunday 9th December, with festivities running from 5.00pm - 8.00pm.
A host of free entertainment on offer for all ages includes facepainting, magicians, balloons, raffles, community stalls, prizes and live music. There will be exciting amusement rides for young and old, with money saving wristbands for sale.
The main event is the lighting of the 6 metre high Menorah by Lord Mayor Graham Quirk with the aid of a cherry picker. The first Menorah lighting took place in Brisbane in 1986, and around the world every lighting of a Menorah in a public place is intended to spread a global message of light and freedom.
But the highlight for me will be the traditional food such as falafel, latkes (potato pancakes) and my favourite - fresh, hot doughnuts! Refreshments and some not so traditional foods such as steaks, burgers and hotdogs will also be on offer to tempt the tastebuds.
So head to the city or stop in after work for a dose of culture, community spirit and help spread a universal message of light and freedom.
