The Channels Festival is a 10 day biennial festival that runs from 18 to 27 September 2015. The independent festival is dedicated to showcasing video art from Australia and overseas. Alongside this, with its workshops, talks and performances it aspires to bring a new avenue for engagement and interaction in the visual form to Melbourne.

Throughout the festival, Channels will present exhibitions, screenings, talks and workshops that examine video art and internet culture, film and VHS, and how artists are working with these elements today.

It will run at a variety of venues in the CBD, Fitzroy and Collingwood, including ACMI and Fed Square, as well as RMIT Design Hub and Grey Gardens Projects in Fitzroy, among others.

Crucially, Channels seeks to showcase video art, film, internet culture and visual art - and will appeal to a broad range of people - not just those who enjoy Youtube, but people interested in art and film and the use of new technology.

While the folks involved with Channels underscore all are welcome, it is perhaps those who hop on YouTube - and then find themselves unable to leave for hours - that such a festival shall appeal to in the first.

Those that love the 'have you seen this video' post on Facebook, those who find themselves ever-sharing on links to friends during lunch break - and perhaps even those who find themselves filming away through their lunch break just for fun - the folks behind Channels wish one and all of you to visit.

Indeed, "it is not just video art that Channels is interested in highlighting, but the culture around it", says Channels Artistic Director Nikki Lam. "Channels is always trying to engaging with the wider community", says Ms Lam.

With this, it can be said Channels is very Melbourne. With the launch of the festival in Niagara Lane immediately the vibe surrounding the upcoming event is one of vibrancy, culture and good-hearted Melbourne fun (and doing a good turn to ensure all folks from bar staff on up were having a good time and no one taking the VIP tag too seriously).

In turn, while this is a festival that showcases serious work and committed artists, it has a vibe that invites interaction and enjoyment across the wider community; leaving a welcome and easy going feel to the festival.

All up, this is a showcase of some of the great local culture on offer - alongside some great art from abroad - and is set to be a surefire way to spend a fun few hours over one day (or indeed many of them) all in the great city of Melbourne.

, an upcoming visual event to indeed keep a watch out for.
