It is great to spend a bit of time in quiet contemplation and appreciation for how far Victoria and Melbourne has come. The
State Library of Victoria is the perfect oasis in busy and redeveloping Swanston Street to allow this to occur.
Head into the Dome Gallery, and you will be in another world in finding out more (and once again appreciating) the people, places and events that have shaped the way our state has become over the last 200 years. This is the epitome of the way of life in Victoria; where Melbourne was fortunately discovered by Europeans (come to think of it, catching a train at Southern Cross Station has that London Euston feel, don't know why) unlike Sydney which was discovered by convicts.
Discover historical artefacts, photos, drawings, maps, letters and diaries which tell the story in full of those people that fortunately made Melbourne a great and diverse city to live in, in tandem with being one of the most culturally diverse; where Melbourne has gained a great reputation from locals and visitors alike as being a city of art and culture.
The items on display at this exhibition include artefacts such as the Batman Deeds, Ned Kelly's armour and the final notes of Australian explorers Burke and Wills. A valuable history lesson if this resonates with you. It is brief but worth the small investment of your time if you are near the Melbourne Central area from now until the 31st of December 2011.
