Beef Fillet Japanese Style
Chanay Restaurant is located at Gouger Street but was surprisingly quiet on our recent two visits. We went back a second time because we wanted to try a dish called Beef Fillet Japanese Style. The food was served really quickly and we were concerned that the dishes might not have what Cantonese Chinese called Wok Hei - "breath of the wok". Wok Hei is achieved by stir frying food in a very hot wok and the end results are piping hot dishes and tender meat. We were pleasantly surprised - all the dishes were piping hot, tasty and the meat was very tender.

Beef Fillet Japanese Style was unique, we had not tasted anything like it before. We think the beef fillet was tossed in spicy wasabi sauce. The beef was perfectly cooked and the wasabi sauce gave the dish a nice zing.

Tofu with Chicken and Salted Fish hotpot dish was still sizzling when it was served. The tofu was cut in much bigger cubes than that in other restaurants and there were chunks of salted fish in the dish. The tofu was tender, contrasted nicely by the salted fish chunks which gave the sauce a delicious salty flavour.

We also ordered the traditional Sweet and Sour Pork dish. The pork was crispy and tender and the sweet and sour sauce was not too overpowering or made the crispy coating of the pork soggy.

The prices for the dishes are reasonable at an average price of $15 per dish and the service was good, so we are not sure why the place is not attracting more customers.
