Everyone needs an island getaway at least once in their life. Fiji is great for that, so are the Phi Phi Islands in Thailand. But if you're looking for something free, doesn't require a passport of hopping on a plane, consider Chambers Island in Maroochydore for your next visit.

Chill out on an island getaway so close to home you're in the same postcode
Found in the middle of
Maroochy River, Chambers Island is a fantastic getaway both locals and tourists. You'll find the walk way on Bradman Ave, near the intersection of
Thomas St.

Get lost amongst the trees
Over on the island you'll find plenty of space to yourself - even if there are already plenty of people on the island, there's just plenty of space to go around. I visited one weekend recently and found the riverside areas to be the most popular. If any one spot was budy, there was another free for your enjoyment just a short walk down the river. It was absolute serenity to sit there and just watch the world go by on the "mainland".

Chambers Island is great for fishing
It won't take you long to talk around the island - but when you go have an wander be sure to check out the beautiful forestry area around the centre. The kids playing amongst the trees absolutely loved it - I saw plenty of them climbing the trees like a bunch of monkeys. Just around the corner from there was a small playground area that was just as popular.

It's also great for just lazing about
Plenty of families made good used of the grassed area around the playground to set up picnic blankets under the shade of the many trees around. Some were lucky enough to grab one of the park's barbecues. If you're not up to cooking your food don't worry, take a short walk back over the walkway and visit
Swan Bites next door to
Swans Boat Hire for some burgers, fish and chips or some fried chicken.

Looking out over Chambers Island and the Maroochy River
Walking around the island you'll find plenty of people just relaxing and taking in the environment. Fishing was one of the most popular activities out here I noticed. The waters just off the island were also shallow and great for families with young kids wanting to have a swim.

Another beautiful view over the Maroochy River from Chambers Island
Chambers Island feels likes it's miles away from home when realistically it's just down the road. It's got a fantastic spot on the middle of the river so it's no wonder it's popular with kids, families, those wanting to fish and others just wanting to relax in the sun on a perfect weekend.
