The dance meditation connects your body, mind and soul
Chakradance is a dance meditation that has the seven chakra energy systems. As Natalie, the dance facilitator with 12 years experiences stated "Chakradance is a form of nourishment for your true self, for your soul. Blending free-flowing movements with particular frequencies of sound, Chakradance will free the energy in your body and open you to a deeper experience of life". No dancing skills or experiences are needed for the class. I've had a chance to experience Chakradance at one of the classes led by the founders of the Chakradance, Natalie Southgate and Douglas Channing.
The dance studio is located in a quiet street at the funky and arty suburb Balmain. Each Chakra dance class works on one energy system of the seven chakras, starting with the Base Chakra, the dance of instincts; and then working up to Sacral Chakra, the dance of sensuality, Sola Plexus Chakra, the dance of power, Heart Chakra, the dance of love, Throat Chakra, the dance of expression, the Third Eye Chakra, the dance of intuition, and then reach to the top of the Crown Chakra, the dance of the soul. The circle starts again from the Base Chakra.
There are three types of class you can choose: the nine-week circle Awakening classes, the seven workshops of Journeying and one workshop of Celebrating. Each of these classes are designed to offer you a deepened experience of the seven major chakras.

The class I attended is the Third Eye Awakening Chakrae dance. It was held in a dark room with candlelit lights. There are cushions and blankets for your comfort, which were placed in a circle. In the centre, there was the candle light in a white bowl. After the warm greetings from Natalie and Douglas, the class started with a five minutes guided meditation to clear our thoughts and bring our mind back in the moment.
When our minds were settled after the meditation, Natalie encouraged the participants to share their experiences from the last dance class, the throat chakra dance. I was very intrigued to experience their experiences through sharing and open discussions. One of them shared that after the dance, she has finally connected herself on a deeper level and was feeling free and amazing.
What does it mean to connect oneself on a deeper level? I had this question lingering in my head while I was doing the warm up exercise with others. But suddenly, I heard a little voice tell me "the answer is in the moment". I felt like something struck my head and woke me up, all I did is relax, trust myself to take the leap and let my body take me on a mysterious journey. I was hearing the wild beats of the Africa drum and the movements of my body were tuned into its spirit, wild, vibrant, innocent and free. I had no thoughts, all I have is here and now, in the moment of the flow. This is something I have never experienced, surrendering myself totally to the power and energy that resides within me, letting go any thoughts and feeling sensationally peaceful and happy, more over, I felt safe and free, just like coming home. Time stopped at that moment and we only came back to the room when the music stopped.
We were all sitting in a circle again, but this time, we were asked to draw anything coming from our intuitive mind in our mandala arts, an ancient art form that assists in meditation and bring messages from our minds. The class wrapped up with smiling and appreciation prayer. I still felt the warmth energy in the room even now. It was like another day in paradise. Want to join me?
Natalie and Douglas welcome you to join them at their transformative weekend retreat held at the tranquil bush settings in Rainbows Reach Retreat, Central Coast from Friday, 26 October to Sunday, 28 October.
